The Barn was born when two families began meeting at one of their homes on Sunday mornings. Their time together was centered on a few simple concepts: God’s Word, worship, and fellowship. Each week, they sang, read and discussed the bible, and shared a meal.
Word spread. Within a few weeks, we’d outgrown the living room, so we moved to an unused barn. And that’s where we’d invite our friends: “Come with us to the barn!”
The barn was old, with gaps between boards that let the light stream in. In the winter, we could see our breath as we sang. In the summer, it was hot and stuffy. But people kept coming, because The Barn met a need: to worship God. Together.
We eventually outgrew the barn, too, but we haven’t outgrown the things that brought us together in the first place. Each week we gather to read and discuss God’s word, to sing, and to share a meal.
We hope you’ll join us.
The Bible
We believe the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of man, and the divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life.
God
We believe in one God, creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Jesus
We believe that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He died on the cross as a sacrifice for the sins of all humanity, according to the Scriptures. Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where at the right hand of the Father He is now our High Priest and Advocate.
The Holy Spirit
We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and to convict, regenerate the believing sinner, and indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and service.
Humanity
We believe that all people are created in the image of God, both male and female. All humanity sinned and is therefore separated from God. Only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can we be saved.
Salvation
We believe that we are saved by faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection which provide the only means of salvation for all who believe. We believe that we are saved by grace alone, not by works.
The Church
We believe that the Church is made up of believers who are united together in the Body of Christ, of which He is the head. We gather to equip and encourage one another. Our calling is to work together to share the good news of Jesus Christ. The fellowship of the Church is essential.
Sacraments
We believe that the Lord’s supper and water baptism are acts of obedience to be done by believers until Jesus returns.
The Second Coming
We believe in the personal and imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that this “blessed hope” has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer.
Resurrection
We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead and a literal Heaven and Hell. The unbeliever will be eternally separated from Christ. The believer will live eternally with him.
Here’s what you can expect when you visit The Barn:
We almost never begin our service on time. We’re too busy catching up with old friends and making new ones.
Chances are you’ll be greeted like family when you walk in the door. We might not be the place for you if you’re looking to disappear into a crowd.
Our music is a mix of modern and ancient choruses and hymns. We have a rotating group of people who lead us, each of whom has their own style. None of them are professional musicians.
We love kids, and we believe singing together as a family is edifying for children and adults alike. This often results in extra noise, but this only adds to the joy of worship.
We have an excellent children’s program for preschool and elementary-aged kids during the sermon. Or, if you prefer, you can keep your kids with you.
We’ve remained true to our roots as a bible study by including a guided discussion time immediately after the sermon. This is our opportunity to wrestle with the text together as we work out what it means to follow Jesus right here, right now, in Nevada County in the twenty-first century.
After the structured part of the morning ends, we share a meal together. Because we believe growth and connection happen in the natural fellowship that occurs around the table, each of our families brings food to share every week. If you’re visiting, please just come: there’s always enough!
And, of course, the connection doesn’t end there. When you’re a part of The Barn, you might find yourself joining a midweek gathering at someone’s home or jumping into a text group for prayer and encouragement. Your kids might have playdates with other families from The Barn. When you’re sick or having a baby, we might show up at your door with a meal. When you’re moving, let us know when and where to show up with our trucks. If the storms of life (real or figurative) knock you down, we’ll be there to help you pick up the pieces.
So, what are you waiting for? No need to dress up (unless you want to). Come, just as you are. We’re looking forward to meeting you.
We’d love to hear from you. Give us a call at 530-512-0516 or fill out the form below and we’ll be in touch.
